In this English-taught Philosophy Research Master’s programme, you will study ethics and political philosophy in relation to societal and political issues – such as climate change, social injustice, protests, public health, technology and digitalization.

What is the nature of critique in French and/or German critical theory? What are the ethical, societal and political questions of digitalization or AI? How can we best understand various practices of protest and activism? Does post-truth rely on myth-building? What ethical questions do climate change or chronic illness pose? These are examples of the kind of questions that you will explore during this programme.

What makes this programme unique is not only its (non-exclusive) emphasis on continental practical philosophy, but also its engagement with pertinent societal and political issues – such as climate change, protest, disability, racism, post-truth and digitalisation. In this programme you will not only deepen your textual knowledge of ethics and (largely continental) social and political philosophy but also learn to apply it in practical relation to issues of justice, truth, equality, care, and ethical values. In doing so, you will both deepen your philosophical conceptual understanding, as well as your skills in ethical, social and political analysis.

In this specialisation you investigate the human mind and its manifold complexities and products, from a philosophical perspective. You study cultural diversity, mental health and neurodiversity, language and communication, AI and science.

What is consciousness? Do we have a free will? As a student in our research master's in The Human Mind and its Complexities you will try to answer these questions by combining analytical philosophy, continental phenomenology and empirical data. This specialization also focusses on Language. Language is an immensely complicated tool. We talk all the time. Language is our main form of social interaction. In this Master’s specialization you’ll explore the richness of language from a social perspective. As a student in our research master Philosophy you will arm yourself with all the necessary tools for a future career in academia.

What is the nature of reality? What does it mean to be human? In the Research Master in Metaphysics and Philosophical Anthropology, you explore fundamental questions about reality and subjectivity in relation to contemporary existential challenges.

In this specialisation, you will tackle fundamental questions about being, reality, human existence, and the relationship between humans and the world. You will explore key philosophical methods and fields of study, from German Idealism and phenomenology to hermeneutics, psychoanalysis, critical theory, and feminist philosophy.

The programme develops your conceptual and critical skills, enabling you to analyse complex questions rigorously and communicate your insights clearly. You will participate in research-focused seminars that provide targeted exploration of specific themes, while also undertaking an independent thesis project on a topic of your choice within the continental tradition.

Through this combination of seminars and independent research, you will gain the ability to situate classical and contemporary theories in relation to pressing philosophical, social, and ethical issues. You will learn not only to study the works of influential thinkers but also to assess what new insights they can offer in today’s context, equipping you to contribute to ongoing debates in continental philosophy and related fields.
