This Master's programme discusses the most pressing environmental challenges of our time, such as environmental justice, nature conservation and biodiversity, animal welfare, circular economy, agriculture and food, sustainable energy, climate change, and water. By critically analysing current policies and initiatives, we contribute to achieving the societal transformations necessary to address sustainability challenges. The programme is small scale and prepares you to play an active and effective role in the transformation to a sustainable and just society. Within the Master's Environment and Society Studies, you have a choice between four Master's specialisations.

In this Master's programme we rethink the principles of current economic systems and analyse how to enhance the environmental responsibility of businesses. We aim to develop new business models that contribute to a sustainable future. What does a sustainable and just economy look like, and how can we enable such a new system?

Environmental justice is a core, urgent issue in sustainability. Who benefits or suffers from pollution? This specialisation explores how to create a healthy environment for people, animals, and nature, while ensuring fair and just sustainability transitions.

This specialisation focuses on the global level of sustainability transformations, such as international agreements and initiatives on climate change, biodiversity and nature conservation on land and in oceans. You will learn how to critically analyse international negotiations. How do international agreements come about, how - and to what extent - are they implemented, and which roles do different stakeholders, such as companies and civil society groups, play in these processes?

In this specialisaton you study innovations and socio-economic transformations that enhance an environmentally sustainable economy, in particular affects the role of business and the market.
More and more businesses believe they have a responsibility to tackle environmental challenges and, indeed, do so. But how can all businesses be forced to think of both planet and profit? Does it work best when the pressure comes directly from governance in the form of economic sanctions and legislation? Or is it better that the pressure comes from consumers demanding sustainability?
In this Master's, you will learn about behavioural economics, organisational studies and innovation management as well as about different environmentally sustainable economies. Examples of sustainable economy include the we-economy, the bio-economy, the circular economy and the sharing economy. Another crucial question is whether these can exist in the current market where the main focus lies on economic growth.
Because of the attention given to both strategy and policy, you'll be able to work as an advisor for both the private and public sector. You could help governmental organisations and NGOs stimulate companies and consumers to make the needed change.
The Master's in Corporate Sustainability is a specialisation of the Master's in Environment and Society Studies.
