Linguistics: Comparative Indo-European Linguistics

This specialisation deals with the study and comparison of a large number of interrelated languages in Europe and Asia, offering you a unique and inspiring programme.

In this one-year programme, you will be able to study languages not taught at any other Dutch institute, such as Armenian, Albanian, Avestan and Lithuanian. Students who want to combine Indo-European Linguistics with an in-depth study of a language or a group of languages will be able to take advantage of the expertise offered by the Faculty of Humanities in such relevant subjects as Indology, Classics, Slavic, Persian and languages of the Ancient Near East. The purpose of this programme is to determine the languages' relationship to each other as well as the changes in the phonological, morphological and syntactic structure of the languages in their historical continuity. The ultimate aim is to explore the possibilities to reconstruct the language that was at the basis of the separate Indo-European languages.

Linguistics: English Language and Linguistics

This specialisation offers a wide range of specialised courses and research topics, both theoretical and applied. In addition, you can combine this with other language-related courses.

This one-year programme focuses on issues related to such questions as how language and people influence each other, and what the real function of language is. You will deal with the application of various aspects of linguistic theory to the description of the facts of English, with a particular emphasis on earlier stages of the language, such as Old and Middle English. The curriculum covers theoretical, applied, historical and socio-historical linguistics. The programme builds on actual linguistic research carried out at the Leiden University Centre for Linguistics (LUCL), one of the largest linguistics institutes in the Netherlands, and you will benefit from the expertise of continental Europe's finest English scholars.

Linguistics: French Language and Linguistics

This specialisation offers you in-depth courses in a wide range of linguistic topics on theoretical and applied linguistics, including language acquisition, syntax, and semantics.

Apart from applying the French language on an academic level - all courses, papers and presentations are in French - this one-year programme offers language courses for special purposes, such as economic and legal French. You will discuss issues such as: How do language and people influence each other? What is the real function of language? Courses are tailored to your individual needs and interests. You will have the option to combine French linguistics with an other Romance language, or with one of the more than eighty different languages from all over the world that are studied in Leiden.

Linguistics: German Language and Linguistics

In this specialisation you will learn to analyse language by studying the constitution of text - spoken as well as written - in its social, medial, cultural and historical context.

This one-year programme - taught in German - provides you with an in-depth insight into the interaction of text and context. The programme is run jointly by Leiden University's Department of German, the University of Amsterdam and the University of Utrecht, and you will be able to take advantage of a broad range of specialised courses. The department's research is particularly strong in the field of historical linguistics. In addition, the programme has close connections with many German universities, including those in Düssseldorf, Leipzig, Münster and Berlin. Research-based co-operation also takes place with the Institute for Cultural German Studies at the Universität Bremen.

Linguistics: Italian Language and Linguistics

In this specialisation you will study the Italian language from a typological perspective, as well as from a historical and sociolinguistic point of view.

In this one-year programme, you will gain insight into the dialectal and regional variations and uses of Italian through courses on both theoretical and applied linguistics, covering topics that include the use of Italian and of Italian dialects. In addition, you will improve your command of the language, as the specialisation is Italian-spoken. Given the flexibility of the specialisation, you will be able to build your own curriculum and concentrate on your preferred aspects of Italian language or linguistics.

Linguistics: Language and Communication

This specialisation focuses on the interaction between languages and the environments in which they are being put to use, including the influence of culture.

In this one-year programme you will study various aspects of language, including the role of words, grammatical constructions and texts. You will also look at the role of language in influencing people's ideas, in regulating social relations, in co-ordinating actions and in exchanging information. In addition, you will study how language interacts with culture and with institutions in communication, as well as with different media – not only speech and writing, but modern media as well – and how language changes in the process. You are free to choose courses from the rich variety of language programmes in Leiden – with eighty different languages from all over the world – or courses from other universities in the Netherlands.

Linguistics: Language Diversity of Africa, Asia and native America

In this specialisation you will gain in-depth knowledge about how linguistic structures from languages spoken around the world differ vastly from our familiar Indo-European languages.

This one-year programme, unique in the Netherlands, is taught by experts who regularly carry out research in Africa, Asia and the Americas, which will enable you to benefit from their relevant experience. You will experience how the languages studied overturn general ideas about language universals. Also, you will learn how to compare and evaluate key research directions in descriptive linguistics. This will equip you with the insights and skills required to carry out independent research, giving you a solid basis for further studies. You are free to choose courses from the rich variety of language programmes in Leiden – with eighty different languages from all over the world – or courses from other universities in the Netherlands.

Linguistics: Theoretical Linguistics and Cognition

In this specialisation you will concentrate on studying the complexity of natural languages, ranging from their syntactic structure to how humans process and produce language.

This one-year programme gives you the opportunity to take advanced courses in all areas of formal grammar - syntax, semantics, phonology - as well as in experimental approaches to speech acquisition, clinical linguistics and the modelling of speech and language. The courses are based on linguistic research carried out at the Leiden University Centre for Linguistics (LUCL), one of the largest linguistics institutes in the Netherlands. You will have the option to choose one of two research areas: Clinical and Experimental Linguistics, which will teach you how to define congenital or acquired linguistic disorders, or Theoretical Linguistics, an in-depth study of syntactic, phonological or semantic topics.

This specialisation aims to familiarize you with the many different challenges a translator faces and with the large variety of reference works, information sources and tools available.

This one-year programme focuses on Dutch/English and English/Dutch translations. As a student, you will not only discuss translation problems, you will also look at the importance of semantics, pragmatics, stylistics and heuristics. In addition, you will study translation theories that can help you to make well-informed choices when translating or editing a variety of text types on a wide range of topics, both in Dutch and in English. This master's programme offers students the oportunity to focus on legal or literary translation.
