The Arts and Culture Research Master's Degree consists of 4 Research Master's programmes:
* Art History (research)
* Gender Studies (research)
* Musicology (research)
* Religious Studies (research)
Ready for a professional blend of Art History, Museum and Curatorial studies? Do you love research? Fancy a 5-month internship? Our research Master's programme immerses you in innovative approaches to the history of art and related digital methods, curatorial and conservation questions and ecological and transcultural challenges. We work in close connection with art and heritage institutes and museums. You will become part of an international community of students and teachers, committed and passionate about art.
Our Art History programme in Utrecht focuses on art, architecture and cultural heritage from the Middle Ages to the present by way of close engagement with artworks as well as dialogue with artists, curators and other cultural makers.
What is gender? How does it intersect with sexuality, race, ethnicity, class, dis/ability, religion, and other markers of difference? Which hierarchies and mechanisms of inclusion or exclusion ensue from these vectors? What role do such power relations play in a world shaped by environmental catastrophe, unequal distribution of resources, and authoritarianisms? And what are the critical tools and political strategies that feminist, queer, antiracist, and anticolonial scholars and social groups have created to imagine a different world?
This two-year Research Master's programme combines a thorough grounding in the history and contemporary state of Gender Studies as an (inter)discipline with intensive training in the critical practice of cultural theories and epistemologies from feminist, postcolonial, critical race, queer, and trans perspectives. It is part of the Graduate Gender Programme at Utrecht University: a space that is exceptional and unique in nature because of its humanities focus, its long-standing international reputation, and its status as one of the largest Gender Studies hubs in Europe.
Religious Studies is a challenging, research-oriented Master's programme that prepares you for participation in international research and for a career in domains where religious diversity and difference are significant factors - in culture, art, and politics. Together, we use religious studies to think about hard questions fueling the fire of public debates. What should museums do with religious objects collected in the colonial past? How and what should children learn about religions in schools? What are the limits of religious tolerance? How do we create a society that is more welcoming to the stories of Others?
The Religious Studies programme at Utrecht University has a strong emphasis on transnational approaches and the multidisciplinary use of methodology - you will learn to work with theories and methods from Anthropology, History, Philosophy, Comparative Literature, and Media Studies.
The programme focuses on Christianity and Islam, but also addresses Jewish and Buddhist traditions, local traditions (e.g. in Africa), and hybrid religious phenomena in contexts of diversity and in popular culture.
The programme engages with the central themes and theories of religious studies, offering opportunities for focused research in the following areas:
* Material and Embodied Religion
* Ethics and Politics in Plural Societies
* Religion and Heritage
* Religious Texts and Practices
GEMMA is the first Erasmus Mundus Master´s Degree in Women's and Gender Studies in Europe.
GEMMA is a joint interdisciplinary programme that provides high quality academic education and professional competencies for personnel intending to work in the areas of Women's Studies, Gender Studies and Equal Opportunities across Europe and beyond. It is our best offer from the Humanities, Social Sciences and Health Sciences.
Created as a result of the concerted efforts of several universities working together within the ATHENA network, the GEMMA Consortium represents the harmonization of seven different institutions from six European countries: University of Granada (coordinator), University of Bologna, Central European University (Budapest), University of Hull, University of Lódź, University of Oviedo and University of Utrecht.
The programme consists of two years of study (120 ECTS) at two chosen centres out of the seven prestigious European universities that participate in the Consortium.
The Home University is the university where you start the programme and complete the first year of study, while the Mobility University is the university where you complete the compulsory mobility semester in the second year of study (and in some cases the fourth semester as well).
How can we think and write about music, its production, its distribution, its reception? Our innovative research Master’s in Musicology programme builds on a 95-year-long history of musicology at Utrecht University and enriches it with the newest perspectives on the field and its entanglements with other disciplines. It prepares you for music careers within and beyond academia where critical engagement, reflection and writing skills are key. Therefore, our programme will train you in advanced research while giving you academic insight into the theoretical and artistic principles underpinning how music is understood and practiced across history and cultures.
The Musicology programme at Utrecht University focuses on Western music from the Middle Ages to the present, the impact of media on the reception and conceptualisation of music, and digital musicology. Interdisciplinary work is central to the programme, and there are particularly strong links with Medieval and Renaissance Studies, New Media & Digital Culture, Gender Studies, Postcolonial Studies, Computational Humanities, as well as Game Research.
