In chemistry, we make and discover things nobody's made or discovered before. We use our skills to manage cool reactions to seek answers to today's great challenges in sustainability, nanomaterials, and molecular life sciences. Both in education and in research, we are driven to understand and advance the molecular processes behind sustainable materials or new drugging strategies.
The Departement of Chemistry offers personal and laboratory-driven teaching in two interdisciplinary Master's programmes:
* Nanomaterials Science: a two-year multidisciplinary Master's programme where you will explore how to make nanomaterials to find solutions for the transition to a sustainable society. It offers students a solid theoretical basis in the field of nanomaterials and develops the experimental skills needed to carry out high-level research. The new Master Sustainable and Circular Chemistry is a chemistry research Master's programme with the objective to equip graduates with the necessary knowledge and skills needed to play an active role in the energy, resource and material transitions. To move away from our current largely fossil based material needs, to break out of the linear take-make-waste paradigm, and to lift the enormous environmental burden of our current consumption, chemists need to design, synthesize, and investigate molecules and materials that are inherently safe, circular, and sustainable. It will train and educate a new generation of chemistry researchers by giving them a strong foundation, with emphasis on synthetic chemistry, catalysis, and analytical and environmental chemistry, coupled with the ability and curiosity to look across the boundaries of science and to connect to different disciplines outside chemistry. The programme adopts a systems-thinking approach to the sustainability transition, reaching out across disciplines using chemistry as a bridging and key enabling science. The core theme is sustainable chemistry, i.e. an integrated combination of chemical reactions and processes that does no longer rely on fossil feedstocks, involves clean and resource-efficient production processes that yield materials that are safe and circular by design.Kennismaken met deze variant?

The combined talents and expertise of physicists and chemists are the key to success in the field of condensed matter and nanomaterials science, which is the focus of this programme. Functional materials, organic and inorganic, play an important role in much of modern physics, chemistry and technology.
In this field there is an obvious trend towards systems which operate on the nanoscale. This includes the exciting areas of nanoscience, nanotechnology and catalysis: the fundamental units such as macromolecules, quantum structures and catalysts have dimensions on the nanometre scale. The challenges in this area of science include:
* the synthesis of functional units and their manipulation to form novel and 'artificial' solids;
* the study of fundamental processes in (nano)structured systems and the development of theory and models to explain new phenomena;
* the elucidation of structure-property relations;
* materials engineering and the application of materials in improved and novel devices.
