Study economic development and globalization in Groningen and learn about the economic development of countries and the impact of economic globalization.
Increasing international trade and finance is opening up new opportunities for the growth of firms, regions and countries. At the same time, it is posing new challenges as the benefits are not equally distributed and inequality is rising. In the one-year Master's degree in Economic Development and Globalization (MSc ED&G), you will learn the tools to grasp the complex relationships between economic globalization and the economic development of regions and countries. You will use state-of-the-art economic theories to discover the impact of...
Are you interested to learn about the links between economic transformation and integration, and international economics?
The degree programme is offered jointly by the University of Groningen, the Netherlands and Corvinus University in Budapest, Hungary.
For a career in international management or public policy, you have to understand the trends in the world economy, including the European Community and the CEE region. Topics of the programme range from international trade and investment to the consequences of globalisation for strategic decision-making, in particular trade and capital, flows in relation to multinational enterprises, and the socio-economic and institutional differences between countries, with a special focus on the CEE-region.
You are trained to become a well-rounded economist with a strong international profile and a deep analytical understanding of the main current trends in the global world of international (economic) policy and business organisations, ranging from the fields of international business and economics to international politics and international law. The core content of the programme reflects the increasing globalisation and continuous evolution of international economics and business management.
This international double degree trains you to be a well-rounded expert in the field of development. You get Master's degrees from two top-class European research universities: Groningen and Lund.
The MEDEG programme is offered by a consortium of the University of Groningen (The Netherlands), Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (Spain) and Lund University (Sweden). You study the first year either in Groningen or Madrid. In the second year, all students move to Sweden to specialise in development and growth issues at Lund University School of Economics and Management. The programme provides you with the theoretical and quantitative tools needed to grasp the main debates in economics and other social sciences, as well as the specialised understanding of context, institutions, and historical legacies in developing economies required to deal with the full complexity of development issues.
The Groningen–Lund programme provides rigorous training in economics and quantitative methods and offers a variety of electives in central topics in development. At the end of each year, you complete an independent research project, closely supervised by the faculty. On successful completion, you will obtain an MSc in Economic Development and Globalization from the University of Groningen, and a Master Degree in Social Science with a major in Economic Development and Growth from Lund University.
Progress in ICT has enabled firms to reorganise production processes on a global scale. What does it imply for income and employment in advanced and developing countries?
In the double degree with the University of Göttingen (Germany) you will obtain specialised knowledge of international markets and the global interconnections between national economies. What are the consequences of globalisation for the socioeconomic and institutional differences between countries and what roles do multinational companies play in this respect? You will learn to apply the tools of modern economic analysis to issues of development policy and to communicate effectively with researchers, policymakers and practitioners on development issues.
In Göttingen, you will benefit from the expertise of researchers regarding microeconomic aspects of development. And you will be trained in applying quantitative research methods that are specifically suitable to study these aspects in a systematic way. The Groningen component of the programme is more focused on macroeconomic and international aspects of development and links these to international business perspectives.
By following the programmes in Göttingen and Groningen, you will graduate with a strong international profile and a deep analytical understanding of global economic policy and business organisations.
The global production system is increasingly becoming more fragmented. This raises some important questions. Is manufacturing located in developed or developing countries? And do fragments have a natural home-base, for example, R&D in developed countries and assembly in developing countries? Some firms participate in this process, others do not. What determines the internationalization choices of firms? What is the role of distance, transportation costs, or language and culture when making these choices? Increasing country specialization has consequences for local labour markets. Are labour markets becoming increasingly specialized as well? Are they becoming more globally integrated, just like commodity markets? In this profile, students will learn to use tools and methods to answer such questions and to independently carry out analyses of the causes and consequences of globalization.
There has been high economic growth with increasing financial fragility since the 1990s worldwide. This was followed by credit crises and recessions in much of the Western world since 2007 and the threat of crisis elsewhere (e.g. China). Students study these developments based on theories of banking, financial markets, international capital flows and exchange rates. How have financial markets and their regulation changed in recent decades? How have changes in exchange rates and capital flows affected policies, for example with respect to the euro area? When is financial development good for economic growth and stability and when does it lead to financial crisis and recession? When do international capital flows contribute positively to an economy and when do they cause harm? What caused the euro crisis and how do we evaluate alternative solutions? In this profile, students will learn to use tools and methods to answer such questions and to independently carry out analyses of the causes and consequences of (financial) globalization.
