A taster lecture offers a representative and in depth introduction to the way teaching is organised within the programme. This mini lecture opens the metaphorical can of worms that is bureaucracy. Most of us reflexively despise it, but what functions do our bureaucratic systems serve? We take a look at the role of street-level bureaucrats and their discretionary powers: Between questions of bias, arbitrariness, and uncertainty, we explore what research can tell as about the key issues shaping 'the law in action' and ask how that process can be made more equitable.
