In this programme, offered by renowned Asia scholars, you will obtain in-depth knowledge of the world's most dynamic and fastest-growing region.
In this two-year master's programme, you have the option to choose various specialisations, allowing you to acquire a broad knowledge base of the history, language and culture of Asian societies, or of the contemporary developments in this dynamic continent.
During the programme, you will benefit from the breadth and depth of Asian studies research in Leiden, which is unparalleled in the Netherlands and combines the very best of Asia-related research in North-Western Europe.
The various specialisations offered within this programme cater for students both with and without prior proficiency in one or more Asian languages. The two-year programme is a good choice for students with ambitions to pursue a PhD position or a career as a researcher outside the academic world.

In this programme you will obtain a command of the language, a broad knowledge of China, insight into its internal and external dynamics, and starting points for contextualising China within Asia.
This two-year specialisation in Chinese Studies is unique in the Netherlands and combines content courses with intensive and advanced language training. You will be taught by internationally recognised experts in fields ranging from political science to literature and religion, as well as experienced teachers of Chinese as a foreign language. A one-year stay at a leading Chinese university will be an important part of your training and education during the programme. In addition, the programme makes use of the resources of the world-renowned Leiden sinological library, one of the largest and most diverse collections in Europe and an important reference point for scholars from around the world.
Asian Studies (2 jaar): Japanese StudiesThis unique specialisation, taught by internationally renowned staff, will provide you with in-depth insights into a comprehensive range of key aspects of modern and pre-modern Japan.
This two-year programme is international and cosmopolitan, drawing students from around the world. This gives the programme an outward-looking and creative focus that seeks to foster 'world citizens' as well as first-class scholars. A two-semester stay at a prominent Japanese university will be an important part of your training and education during the programme.
