Media Studies: Film and Photographic Studies

The specialisation covers the history and theory of film and photography within the broad context of visual and other media.

This one-year programme is the only one, nationally and internationally, to focus on film, video and photography while maintaining an interdisciplinary approach. You will acquire an in-depth understanding of the specific histories, institutions and discourses of cinema, photography, video and other media arts. The staff maintain extensive contacts with other academic and cultural institutions in the Netherlands and abroad, providing students with immediate access to a broad professional network. Graduates of this master's programme are qualified for positions as film and photographic historian, museum curator, critic, manager of a photographic agency or exhibition producer.

Media Studies: Comparative Literature and Literary Theory

This specialisation focuses on the study of literature from a comparative and theoretical perspective, covering a wide range of languages and cultures from around the world.

This one-year programme is not limited to the literatures of one specific language or culture, but offers a wide range of study options. It utilises the expertise and infrastructure available within the Faculty of Humanities to encourage an intercultural approach to literature. The programme includes four main fields of study which are integrated in the various courses: Literary Theory; Comparative Literature; Interculturality (cross-cultural approach); Intermediality (cross-mediatic approach).

Media Studies: Journalistiek en nieuwe media

Deze specialisatie biedt je de mogelijkheid om een professionele journalistieke schrijfstijl te ontwikkelen én om je in een academische context te ontwikkelen.

De zwaartepunten in deze eenjarige opleiding liggen bij internetjournalistiek, wetenschapsjournalistiek, en bedrijfsjournalistiek. Nieuwe media vormen de rode draad die door alle onderdelen heen loopt: de aanpak is multimediaal, met een sterke nadruk op researchvaardigheden. Het programma geeft ruime aandacht aan: Cross-mediale technieken die journalisten inzetten om hun publiek te overtuigen via beeld, geluid en tekst; Retorische principes binnen journalistieke genres; De taalbeheersing en het stilistisch vermogen in diverse genres en verschillende media; Onderzoek naar de journalistieke praktijk (via een stage). Het onderwijs in dit programma is in het Nederlands.

Media Studies: Book and Digital Media Studies

This programme - the only one of its kind in the Netherlands - covers the entire history and present practice of textual transmission from manuscript to the Internet.

This one-year specialisation focuses on the dynamic process of the transmission of knowledge and information through analogue (print) and electronic (internet) media. You will study both the historical development - from Gutenberg to Gates - and the modern practice of textual communication within its societal and technological context. Much attention is given to the far-reaching consequences of the digital revolution for the world of the book. The programme has three main points of focus: Digital access to cultural heritage; History of the book; Publishing Studies.
