This specialisation offers a unique opportunity to study the Bible (Hebrew Bible and New Testament) in its historical, material and literary context.
This one-year specialisation consists of a core programme focusing on key documents, a flexible programme of your individual choice and the master's thesis. These elements supplement one another and ensure that every student benefits from the many resources Leiden University has to offer. Since texts cannot be understood separately from their context, special attention will be given to relevant aspects of Ancient Near East cultures and the Classical World, including material remains and intercultural aspects.
Theology and Religious Studies: ChristianityThis specialisation offers a unique opportunity to study the historical and contemporary forms of Christianity from a global, multi-religious and multidisciplinary perspective.
In this one-year programme you will generally approach research themes from a regional perspective. The staff include specialists in Christianity in Europe, North America, the Middle East and East Asia (China, India). The Leiden specialisation in Christianity aims to foster an academic attitude in students that is based on a thorough and critical study of many different types of sources (written, oral, visual, etc.). You will analyse these sources by employing a wide variety of approaches inspired by historical, anthropological, linguistic and sociological methodologies.
Theology and Religious Studies: Islam in the Contemporary WestIn this specialisation you will study the relation between Islam and the West from various perspectives: legal, political, theological and cultural anthropological.
This one-year programme focuses on the interaction between Muslims and Islam within a minority situation in the West, and the reactions in Western societies. You will be guided in your studies by a teaching staff with extensive knowledge of this subject, both theoretical and practical. During the programme you will be expected to participate not only in the study of the features of Islam as a living religion within the Western secular context, but you will also be asked to concentrate more specifically on the position of Muslims and the development of Islam within a particular geographical area - North America, Western Europe or South-East Europe.
Theology and Religious Studies: JudaismIn this specialisation you will study the development of the history of the Jews as a minority group in society, with emphasis on the cultural and social aspects.
In this one-year programme you will be able to choose from specialist courses in four areas: Historiography, Judaism in the Greco-roman period, Mysticism and Modernity. In addition, you will have the opportunity to follow your personal interests and goals. The study of various other languages and cultures in Leiden has strengthened the study of Judaism and Jewish culture, opening up opportunities for approaches in combination with other disciplines and interdisciplinary methods. Partnerships with universities from Israel, Germany and the U.S. ensure a constant exchange of knowledge in the form of visiting lecturers in various disciplines.
Theology and Religious Studies: Religion, Culture and SocietyThis specialisation focuses on religion from comparative or historical perspectives, or with an intellectual distance. It is intended for students interested in religious diversity and interaction.
This one-year programme brings together approaches from the history of religions, comparative religion, sociology of religion, psychology of religion, philosophy and ethics. Students are required to study religion from a variety of perspectives and to formulate integrated research questions. You will have the option to choose both a focus area (a particular religious tradition or a chosen theme, such as 'religion and violence', 'pilgrimage', 'freedom of religion', 'esotericism') and a disciplinary angle from which the subject will be approached. The Institute for Religious Studies, and the Faculty of Humanities as a whole, are unique in the broad scope of their geographical, historical, and disciplinary expertise.
