This programme provides comprehensive training covering the entire range of present-day research on the ancient civilisations of Greece and Rome, Egypt and the Near East.
This one-year master's programme is unique in the Netherlands in the breadth of its subject matter, the historical periods covered and its multidisciplinary approach. Its range is wide: from the beginning of history in Egypt and Mesopotamia up to the Medieval texts in Neo-Latin, Coptic or Hebrew. You will focus on reading ancient texts in their original languages, and discuss the different interpretations that the texts allow.
The Leiden programme distinguishes itself by offering expertise in the world of the Hebrew Bible, emerging Christianity, ancient Mesopotamia, Anatolia, Egypt (ancient, antique and late-antique) and Greco-Roman Antiquity, all studied from a multidisciplinary perspective.

This one-year programme offers a wide range of specialised courses and research topics tailored to your individual needs. You will gain a comprehensive view of the classical world, while learning to define the significance it still has for modern society. You will benefit from the expertise of three universities, as the Classics programme is organised in collaboration with the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and the Vrije Universiteit of Amsterdam (VU).

If you hold a BA in Egyptology you will further deepen the knowledge you gained in your BA study; if your BA degree is in the ancient Mediterranean world, you will follow an introductory programme. This one-year programme is the only one of its kind in the Netherlands. The staff members co-operate with international universities and research institutes on project topics including Egyptian art history, archaeology, religion and Coptic Egypt. All students will visit excavations and research projects in Egypt and will learn about the department's own field and research projects, including excavations at Saqqara and the Dakhla Oasis.
