Oudheidstudies (research)
This programme provides intensive and comprehensive academic training covering the entire range of present-day research on the civilisations of Greece and Rome and the Ancient Near East.
The two-year research programme distinguishes itself by consistently integrating the world of the Hebrew Bible, emerging Christianity, the cuneiform cultures of Ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt (ancient, antique and late-antique) and Greco-Roman Antiquity within their broader context. The number of specialisations available is unparalleled.
The programme makes creative use of a wide range of methods, all of them well-represented at Leiden University. Traditional philology with its intimate knowledge of languages and texts, while still indispensable, is enriched by social history and political theory, comparative literature, the study of religion in an anthropological perspective, as well as archaeology and material culture.
As a graduate of this programme you will be qualified to work as a junior academic researcher in an academic environment or to carry out further research work in a PhD-programme.

This research specialisation focuses on the multidisciplinary study of the Greek and Roman world, including Latin literature of the modern period, Ancient Philosophy and Ancient History.
The Department of Classics in Leiden is the oldest in the Netherlands and has held chairs in Latin and Greek since the university was founded in 1575. The academic staff is internationally renowned for their research work. During the programme, you will either choose five electives specific to your specialisation, or choose one elective and spend a period of time at an academic institution abroad.
Classics and Ancient Civilisations (Research): New Testament and Early Christian StudiesIn this specialisation you will combine in-depth textual and archaeological research on the world of the New Testament, emerging Christianity and the shaping of classical Judaism.
Starting as a Palestinian-Jewish sect, Christianity from the outset came into contact and conflict with religious traditions of many sorts. In this programme, you will study how a social and religious minority formed its identity through reflection and adaptation, and how this religion eventually transformed the Graeco-Roman world and became the foundation of Western culture. This two-year programme focuses on texts as well as on material culture. You will have the opportunity to take part in an archaeological excavation in Galilee (www.kinneret-excavations.org).
Classics and Ancient Civilisations (Research): Hebrew Bible StudiesThis specialisation takes Hebrew Bible Studies in its broadest sense and covers the literature and culture of Ancient Israel within its wider context (the world of the Old Testament/Hebrew Bible).
This two-year research programme has a strong focus on languages, chiefly Hebrew and Aramaic, but also Phoenician, Ugaritic and other small corpus languages. However, history and material culture are also taken into account. The programme is not so much geared towards Theology or Old Testament Studies, but rather focuses on the languages and civilisations of ancient Syria-Palestine. During this programme you will either choose five electives specific to your specialisation, or choose one elective and spend a period of time at an academic institution abroad.
Classics and Ancient Civilisations (Research): AssyriologyAssyriology is studied in its broadest sense in this specialisation, including the multi-disciplinary study of the various civilisations employing the cuneiform script for different languages.
Leiden's Assyriology programmes have gained international recognition and the department's staff is involved in a variety of research projects. During the programme, you will either choose five electives specific to your specialisation, or choose one elective and spend a period of time at an academic institution abroad.
Classics and Ancient Civilisations (Research): EgyptologyThis specialisation covers Ancient Egypt from its beginnings and its role as a major player during the Bronze Age until the Christian period from the perspective of both textual and material data.
This research specialisation in Egyptology traces its roots back to the 19th century, when Leiden's National Museum of Antiquities acquired and started to study its famous collection of Egyptian antiquities. The two-year programme - the only one of its kind in the Netherlands - combines this tradition with the latest results of international scholarship. During the programme you will either choose five electives specific to your specialisation, or choose one elective and spend a period of time at an academic institution abroad.
