This programme has a strong international orientation and focuses on the study of European and non-European history in a global context. You will be able to choose one of various specialisations.

The Leiden University Institute for History has a wide-reaching academic scope. This one-year master's programme is an accurate reflection of this academic range and offers you the chance to obtain a degree based on your own particular interests and ambitions.

The wide range of chairs in history which include most European and non-European areas, combined with the archive material available in Leiden University and in The Hague makes the study of nearly all areas of the world an option.

Varianten

History: Ancient History

In this specialisation you will study the history of the Greek and Roman period, with a focus on the history of the mentality and the social and economic history in the period 400 B.C. - 400 A.D.

The one-year programme covers a wide range of subjects, including: The complex history of the Roman Republic; Civic life in Italy, Asia Minor and Egypt; Graeco-Roman religion; The rise of Christianity. Not only will you work with the staff of the Ancient History department, you will also have the opportunity to co-operate with scholars working in other fields of History, or with those working in the related scientific fields. Students with an interest in the study of documentary texts will have access to Greek inscriptions and will be able to work alongside papyrologists at the Leiden Papyrological Institute.

History: Archival Studies

In this specialisation you will acquire the knowledge and skills of a professional archivist. This will enable you to provide users of historical archives with professional guidance.

The emphasis in this one-year programme is on developing the knowledge and skills that are needed to appraise, select and acquire archives based on their societal and cultural context, and to make archives accessible within their historical context. In addition, you will study the context in which the archives were compiled. During this programme you will benefit from the department's structural collaboration with the National Archive in The Hague. The specific focus of this programme makes it unique in the Netherlands.

History: Europaeum Programme European History and Civilisation: Leiden-Oxford-Paris Programme

This unique specialisation is jointly offered by Leiden University, Université Paris I - Panthéon/Sorbonne and the University of Oxford. You will spend a trimester at each institute.

Upon graduation, you will receive an MA degree in History from Leiden University and a certificate from the Europaeum, an association of leading European universities. In this one-year programme you will gain wide-ranging, in-depth knowledge of the processes, thoughts, values and ideas that helped build Europe from medieval to modern times. Students will spend a trimester at each of the three academic institutions, receiving specialist courses, lectures, seminars, and individual tutorials, and will be expected to produce a significant piece of their own research.

History: Colonial and Global History

This specialisation, which has a strong international appeal, explores the dynamic interaction between civilisations in global history.

In this one-year programme you will study the question of how worldwide political, economic, cultural and religious contacts have shaped the processes that led to the development of regional identity and the formation of states. You will gain a strong comparative and connective perspective on transnational processes such as imperialism, colonialism, Islamisation, modernisation and globalisation. Apart from this global, panoramic perspective, this specialisation offers intensive practical and in-depth training in how to investigate primary sources. The programme has a strong international appeal, ensuring you will be part of an international community of students and scholars.

History: Europe 1000-1800

This specialisation focuses on the momentous cultural and political transformations that characterised the period between 1300-1700.

The one-year programme allows you to specialise in the history of the Low Countries, which in this period was one of Europe's major commercial, cultural and political hubs. However, you also have the option to explore the history of other parts of Europe, especially the Habsburg world. Unlike most other Dutch history departments, Leiden offers expertise in British, Iberian and Central European history as well as in the political and cultural history of the Netherlands. You will be encouraged to think comparatively about the transformations in politics, culture and religion of this era.

History: Migration and Global Interdependence

This specialisation focuses on issues such as migration, integration, discrimination, citizenship, social cohesion and civil society from a historical and geographical comparative perspective.

This one-year programme will train you to approach current issues such as migration from an academic perspective. To gain a deep understanding of these issues, you will focus on changes and continuities from the 16th to the 20th century. The programme has an interdisciplinary apporach, applying and adapting theories from sociology, anthropology, political science, criminology and economics. In addition, there is a focus on a wide variety of sources. You will work with diaries, newspapers, parliamentary papers, population registers, interviews, novels, photos and films, statistics and business archives.

History: Political Culture and National Identities

In this specialisation you will study the political culture and national identity of a number of European countries (in the period 1800-2010), viewed from an international perspective.

You will focus on the connections between various countries in Europe. The concept of 'cultural transfer' will be applied to the political domain, for instance with regard to social movements, parties, parliaments and the use of symbols and material objects. In addition, also European and international or supra-national organisations, such as those involved in post-war European unification, can be studied as platforms of cultural and political transfer. Within this one-year specialisation it is also possible to focus on Political Debate.
